Dr. Marisa Serrato is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

She incorporates principles of integrative holistic medicine, clinical nutrition and functional medicine, as well as mind-body approaches, into her work as a psychiatrist. As much as is possible, Dr. Serrato has a goal of understanding the root causes of a person’s symptoms and to use this information to target treatment. She utilizes a comprehensive approach to thoroughly evaluate a person’s symptoms and formulate an individualized treatment plan.

Dr. Serrato may provide recommendations for a person to optimize their self-care, including their nutrition, sleep hygiene, and exercise, and emphasizes the importance of the elimination of potentially harmful substances or behavioral practices which may be contributing to a person’s symptoms. In addition to reviewing options for treatment with psychiatric medications when medically necessary, she may also review options for psychotherapy, stress-management skills, supplement use, or other holistic practices, when clinically appropriate.

Originally from Chicago, she attended Amherst College for her undergraduate education and received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 2001. She completed residency training at Allegheny General Hospital and the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where she also completed one year of fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She further specialized in College Mental Health at the Ohio State University Counseling and Psychological Service. Through her advancing career, Dr. Serrato has also completed multiple trainings and certifications in integrative medicine, functional medicine, and mind-body medicine, as well as fellowship training in Functional Psychiatry through Psychiatry Redefined.

She is also a Benson-Henry Institute Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) Certified Healthcare Practitioner and a Wellcoaches Certified Health and Well-being Coach, and Lifestyle Medicine Coach. She has also engaged in training in Ayurveda, hypnotherapy, auricular acupuncture, and yoga nidra.

Dr. Serrato’s psychiatric services are typically most appropriate for mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety or depression, sleep problems, fatigue, eating concerns, obsessions and compulsions, chronic stress, attention problems/poor concentration, and low energy.

She provides telehealth services to patients when they are located in Illinois. Dr. Serrato treats adults 18 to 65 years old. She does not prescribe controlled substances, including benzodiazepines or stimulants, through her telehealth practice.
